The venue sets the tone for the whole day: it is often the first booking to make, sometimes more than a year in advance. Here's how to choose it without unpleasant surprises.

Start with capacity and the date

Before even visiting:

• Establish a realistic estimate of the number of guests (cocktail and dinner may differ).
• Check availability for your date — Saturdays from May to September book up first.
• Have a plan B in case of rain if the venue relies on outdoor space.

The questions that change everything

1. Is the caterer required or can you choose your own? A required caterer can represent the largest item in the budget.
2. Until what time is music allowed? Some venues cut off at 2 a.m.
3. Are furniture, tableware, and staff included?
4. Is there on-site accommodation for the couple and guests?
5. What exactly does the security deposit cover, and when is it returned?

Visit like a professional

During the visit, observe the natural light at the time of your reception, test the route from the ceremony, count the parking spaces, and ask to see photos of weddings actually held on site.

Tip: ask for the house rules before signing — confetti, fireworks or petals are sometimes prohibited.
