Children at weddings: meals, activities and stress-free organization

Inviting children to a wedding can bring a lot of life to the day, provided you plan a few details adapted to their rhythm. A 3-year-old child doesn't have the same needs as a teenager, and parents enjoy the celebration much more when they know the organization has been thought through for them.

Ask for the children's ages

Don't be satisfied with the total number. Ask for ages when confirmations are made. This allows the caterer and entertainers to offer something truly suitable.

Should you plan a specific menu or not?

For the younger children, a simple menu served earlier can be preferable. Ask the caterer:

• from what age the adult menu is charged ;
• if there is a children's menu ;
• possible serving time ;
• allergy management ;
• availability of high chairs.

For teenagers, the adult menu is often more appropriate.

Children's table or table with the parents?

For very young children, staying with the parents is generally simpler. A children's table works better for a group that is sufficiently autonomous, ideally with an adult or an entertainer nearby.

Seating should also take families into account in your seating plan.

Create an activity area

It is not necessary to organize a parallel party. A few quiet activities can be enough during the meal:

• coloring pages ;
• building toys ;
• small puzzles ;
• books ;
• instant camera under supervision ;
• a treasure hunt adapted to the venue.

Avoid games containing many small pieces if very young children are present.

A quiet corner can save the evening

After several hours of music and activity, some children need to rest. If the venue allows, plan a small quiet room with rugs, cushions, or suitable sleeping arrangements.

Check with the venue that this space can be used safely and remains accessible to parents.

Should you hire a babysitter or an entertainer?

From a certain number of children, a professional can make a real difference. Their role should be clearly defined: entertainment, mealtime, accompanying to the toilets, supervision, or putting children to bed.

Ask for the maximum number of children per caregiver and the ages covered.

Safety: look at the venue from a child's eye level

During the site visit, look out for:

• stairs ;
• ponds or swimming pools ;
• nearby roads ;
• kitchens ;
• candles ;
• DJ cables ;
• doors leading directly outside.

A beautiful pool for photos requires particular vigilance when children are present.

Inform the parents

A few weeks before the wedding, specify what is planned: children's menu, entertainer, possible sleeping arrangements and schedules. Parents will then know what they need to bring themselves.

Keep the organization flexible

A child may refuse to stay at the assigned table or need their parents earlier than expected. The goal is to help families, not to impose a strict program.

With an adapted meal, a secure space and a few well-chosen activities, children have a great day and the adults can fully enjoy the reception.
