Indian wedding in France: rituals, ceremony flow and organization

By Admin·

An Indian wedding rarely takes place in a single day. Depending on the families' region of origin, religion and habits, it often stretches over two to five days, with rituals that each have their own atmosphere, outfits and vendors. Organizing it in France requires translating these traditions into a practical framework: venues, schedules, caterers and guests who may not be familiar with the customs.

A wide diversity of traditions

Not a single "Indian wedding"

A pendjabi, gujarati, bengali, tamoul or malayali wedding does not take place in the same way. The rituals described here are those most commonly found in Hindu weddings from northern India. Sikh weddings follow the Anand Karaj ceremony, celebrated at the gurdwara, and Tamil weddings have their own rites, which we detail in our guide to Hindu marriage.

Clarify both families' expectations

Before booking anything, list with the families the ceremonies each considers essential. Some families insist on every step, others prefer a condensed weekend format. This discussion prevents booking a venue or vendor for an event that is ultimately abandoned.

The steps before the wedding day

The engagement

Depending on the families, they take the form of an intimate ceremony (roka, sagai) or a full celebration. They mark the agreement of both families and kick off the preparations.

The haldi

A turmeric paste is applied to the bride and groom's face, arms and legs by their relatives. The joyful and messy ritual is usually held the morning of or the day before the wedding, often at home or in a garden. Plan outfits that can be stained and a space that is easy to clean.

The mehndi

The bride has elaborate henna designs applied to her hands and feet while relatives sing, dance and also decorate their hands. An experienced henna artist needs several hours for the bride: book her early. Our article on the mehndi and sangeet evening details the organization.

The sangeet

An evening of music and dance where both families present choreographies, often prepared for weeks. It requires a room with a stage or clear dance floor, a DJ who knows Bollywood and bhangra music, and sometimes a dhol player.

The wedding day

The baraat

The groom arrives with his family and friends in a dancing procession to the sound of the dhol. Traditionally on horseback, he also arrives in a decorated car. In France, check with the venue and the municipality what is possible on public roads or on the venue's parking area.

The welcome and garland exchange

The bride's family welcomes the groom's, then the couple exchange flower garlands (jaimala). This highly photographed moment deserves a cleared space and good lighting.

The ceremony under the mandap

The priest (pandit) leads the ceremony under a mandap, a decorated structure that shelters the sacred fire. The couple circles it during the pheras, reciting vows at each step. According to tradition, sindoor and the mangalsutra follow, symbols of marriage. The ceremony time is often set by the priest according to a favorable hour: take this into account in the venue schedule.

The fire indoors

The sacred fire is central. Many venues accept it in an appropriate container, but others forbid it for safety reasons. Ask before signing and have the venue validate the setup.

The vidaai and the reception

The vidaai, the emotional departure of the bride to her new family, closes the ceremony. The reception can follow the same evening or the next day, often with a dinner, speeches and a big dance party.

Organizing in practice

One venue or several?

One venue for two days simplifies logistics, but haldi, mehndi and the reception do not have the same needs. Many couples keep the haldi at home, book a small venue for the mehndi and a large one for the wedding and reception.

The calendar

The date is not chosen only according to venue availability. In many families, the priest or an astrologer proposes favorable dates and times, and certain periods of the year are avoided. Ask the families for these dates before contacting venues, then look for a place available on one of them. Weekends from May to September book up quickly: if the favorable date falls on a weekday, it's often good news for the budget and vendor availability. Also plan time for mandap assembly and decoration, sometimes the evening before.

The caterer

Food is at the heart of the celebration: regional dishes, vegetarian buffets, street food stations. To choose, read our guide to the Indian wedding caterer and compare the Indian cuisine caterers on DreamWeds.

Specialized vendors

Priest, mandap decorator, henna artist, makeup artist experienced with Indian brides, photographer who knows the rituals: these vendors should be booked early, especially during wedding season.

Guests discovering the traditions

A small booklet or a page on the wedding website explaining each ritual helps non-Indian guests follow and participate. Also indicate the dress code for each event. For intercultural couples, our advice for a multicultural wedding helps build a program that respects both families.

Frequently asked questions

How many days does an Indian wedding last?

Most often two to five days depending on the families, with haldi, mehndi, sangeet, ceremony and reception. In France, many couples condense the essentials into a long weekend.

Can the ceremony with the fire be held in a reception hall?

It is possible in many venues with an appropriate setup, but not everywhere. Have it validated in writing before booking.

Is a civil marriage also required in France?

Yes. In France, only the marriage celebrated at the town hall has legal value, and it must precede the religious ceremony.

What should guests wear?

Colorful outfits are welcome; avoid all-white and all-black, often associated with mourning. The couple usually indicates a dress code per event.
