Save the date for a wedding: when to send it and what to include?

The save the date is used to inform your loved ones early enough so they can reserve the date of your wedding. When to send a save the date?

Six to nine months before the wedding is often a good guideline. If the date falls during the summer, a long weekend, or a school holiday period, you can notify loved ones even earlier.

For guests coming from abroad

When travel requires a plane ticket or several nights in a hotel, plan further ahead. Guests will be able to take time off work, compare transportation options, and book their accommodation before prices rise.

What to put on the save the date?

Keep it simple: the first names of the couple, the date, the city or region, and a line stating that the full invitation will arrive later. If the wedding takes place over several days, state this clearly.

Avoid putting a detailed program or a definite schedule that may still change. You can also add the URL of your wedding website if you have one, with the information already confirmed.

Paper or digital save the date?

Digital format is quick to distribute and convenient for distant families. Paper can carry more value for a very formal wedding. Both can work: above all, choose a format consistent with how you communicate with your guests.

And after?

The wedding invitation should then specify the times, venues, RSVP details, practical information and, if necessary, transportation or accommodation instructions. The save the date does not need to contain everything.
